Capitalization Rule-11 in detail with easy examples

We do not need to capitalize the words city, town, county, etc. if they come before a proper noun. But, if they come after a proper noun, they must be capitalized. This is the capitalization rule number 5

Incorrect

  1. We all wanted to visit the City of New York.
  2. My sister got her mobile break in New York city.

Correct.

  1. We all wanted to visit the city of New York.
  2. My sister got her mobile break in New York City.

Which of the following options is correct? Choose the correct option.

The accident took place in the Delhi _________, India.

  1. a) City
  2. b) city

Answer: The correct option is “a” (if the word city comes after a proper noun, it must be capitalized.)

Are the right words capitalized in the sentence? Answer in one word i.e.  Yes or No

The City of London is home to the iconic clock tower, Big Ben.

Answer: No (We do not need to capitalize the words city, town, country, etc. If they come before a proper noun. So, the correct answer is “The city of London is home to the iconic clock tower, Big Ben.”
