It is normal that learners initially find it a bit difficult to understand what are Common nouns, Proper Nouns, Collective Nouns, Material Nouns, and Abstract nouns. Basically, these are the kinds of Nouns or Types of Nouns.

What is a Common Noun?

A singular noun that refers to the whole class is a Common Noun. Common nouns refer to general, everyday things and are not specific to any particular person, place, or thing. For example: “cat,” “book,” and “city.”

A common Noun is common to all persons or things of the same class or kind is a Common Noun. We can also say that a common noun does not point to any specific/particular name of a person, place, or thing.

Unlike Proper Noun, Common Noun does not begin with a capital letter. Unless it either begins in a sentence or occurs in the title.

Examples of Common Nouns

  4. I love to visit different places. (City, state, country, continent, coffee shop, restaurant, park, zoo, river bank, village area, town area, etc.)
  5. An idea can change your life. (envy, love, hate, respect, patriotism, pride, etc.)
